Format/Genre: One hour; drama/thriller; ten-episode season.
Logline: When Troy Bonnes creates the game, Risk, he and his friends are forced to confront issues within themselves and within their society, but what starts off as some edgy fun, evolves, spawning an entire social movement.
Pitch:
Based on my novel and Jameson prize finalist script of the same name, Risk revolves around a group of hedonistic college students who play the ultimate dare game. Bored, high and disillusioned with the world, the main character, Troy, creates the dare game, Risk.
The rules are simple:
1 - There is always a buy-in to play, making sure that players have something to lose.
2 - Write a Risk mission on a card, you always run the risk of choosing your own card, so play nice.
3 - Missions go into the hat.
4 - Roll a dice to determine who chooses when.
5 - You have seven days to complete a mission.
6 - Winner takes the pot.
The nature of the characters make for ballsy, risque missions, as the game forces them to confront issues within themselves and within society. But what starts off as some edgy fun, evolves, spawning an entire social movement.
Risk is a quasi Yizo Yizo, Mr Robot, Fight Club and Mad Men, all rolled into one. It’s a series about the times we live in, and a series about the feelings and thoughts of the people who live in these times.
It’s a TV show that encapsulates emotion, the ones we’re told not to feel, the ones that drive at our psyche and makes us want to change things, makes us want to rise up and say: “this is bullshit!”
It’s a show that will strike a chord with those in the 16-year-old to 40-year-old demographic, as it’s edgy and bold. This generation especially, is not truly happy with the way society is run, with the way we’re force-fed propaganda, prescription drugs and social media influencers, to keep us calm, to keep us submissive. This generation self- medicates on recreational drugs, booze and airbrushed, fake social media profiles.
Risk is a show that can shape itself to every culture, to every country, because there are issues everywhere and the Risk game is designed to bring those issues to the forefront.
It’s a show that feels these things at its core but knows that life is so much better with a bit of humor, a bit of wit, a big splash of entertainment. It’s a show that’s aware of itself, aware that it can only do so much to change anything, conscious of its role in the world.
Risk is a T.V show. One that should be made, and one that will be watched. Risk is that pleasure that we don’t always want to indulge, but that we do anyway because we’re human beings and given all the things we go through, we deserve release.
